Process Modual_The Happening

As part of the process module we were asked to curate a 'happening' which could take place over 24 hours.
Working alongside Vita Woods {www.vitawoods.blogspot.com} we sought to create and an analogue investigation into self.

In a reaction to the digital age, where memories have become erasable and the ‘self’ less often considered.
Piece of Yourself prompted individuals to question who they are and how they continue to be shaped by their memories and perceptions of the world.

Using strictly analogue methods, Piece of Yourself invited people to take part in creating their individual ‘archive’; A tangible piece of communication with a material permanence.

Chosen individuals were contacted via post and asked to fill out ‘data’ cards which posed thought provoking and personal questions, and asked the individual to share themselves.

On the day, individuals and passers by were invited to take part and their data cards added to the file.
The success of the experiment relied upon the willingness and curiosity of the participants to share, which was increased by the tactile nature, comfort and trust of analogue communication and the props used.

Specimens were invited from the participants, and throughout the day, thought provoking and ‘telling’ prompts were given so that the ‘self’ may be exposed.

Participants were asked to communicate with each other and Piece of Yourself became an inviting method of communication, with a tactile outcome.

Piece of Yourself acted as a mode of archiving expression of the ‘self’ and sought to question the nature of 'being' in an accessible yet subtle manner.

This is a line up for a project titles Network: Sequences and Series 1.

The work acts as a precollection for my final major project. I need to do alot more development here but I hope it gives you an insight into my aesthetic. I will be building on these for the next 7 or so weeks and I hope to have some regular updates for you to comment on.

This project brief "Dimensions, Perspectives, Body, Spheres" allows us to explore the role of the body in 21st century fashion and beyond.

I am interested in the body as a nurturer, and a destroyer, through illness. My own fathers journey through his disability caused by Stroke in 1991 underpins my work.

Considering memory loss and the breach that brain damage can cause I thought about fragrance and scent as our strongest and most powerful and primitive link to our sense of memory.

In a design for need context fragrance can be used to treat and help with memory loss in Alzheimer's or Dementia and many other conditions .

For this garment I used my Dads archived patterns to reinterpret what he did as a tailor from my perspective as a fashion designer and daughter. Transparent chiffon and organza were used to reveal the inner workings of the crafted and hand sculpted elements of a tailored garment. Skin tones of blush and nude emphasized the body and micro encapsulated scent was embedded in a poetic and intimate way redolent of the memories explored and the role of my parents. Masculine and feminine fragrances intermingles next to the skin and in the body atmosphere to tickle the wearer.

This is the beginning of my work with scent from a design perspective, do watch this space for further insights.

Zero, as a brief and project focuses on ethical and sustainable clothing and is set in 2025. For me all of my work starts by musing on the self and my family. A compilation of desk research set in the future and looking at scientific forecasting enabled me to create a narrative surrounding the Grant family. From there Characters with traits reflected in garments.

Using a found tailored jacket I explored and investigated documenting the process and maintaining the life of the garment by re working and draping it to compile a look.
